2024 Mazda CX-90: A New Addition or a Replacement?

Mazda has been preparing a premium line of SUV with the new 2024 Mazda CX-90. This three row vehicle is designed as the company’s premium lineup. When it debuts, it should be coming with a new inline six turbocharged unit and a spacious cabin. The current crossover, the CX-9, comes with impressive performance (and handling) and also good looking appearance. Hopefully, both of these features can contribute to the better performance and look of the CX-90.

About the CX-90

As the premium model for Mazda, this three row and seven seater vehicle is able to provide more luxury features than the current available SUVs. It’s most likely that all wheel driving system would be offered as the standard features for all the ranges, while the e-Skyactive (the new inline six cylinder turbocharged unit with 3.3 liter capacity) would be offered as the optional pick.

The CX-90 is built on longitudinal engine architecture, and the same architecture is expected to be used in the CX-70 model (the two row model). The CX-90 would release first, followed by the CX-70. If everything goes as expected, the CX-90 should debut in 2023 – most likely around January. Sales will follow not long afterwards.

The Updated Plan

It’s safe to say that the 2024 Mazda CX-90 would be a new nameplate. But until now, it’s still unclear whether the CX-90 would replace the CX-9 in the lineup or it would be included in the lineup together. Mazda hasn’t said anything about this future plan.

Trim Levels and Price

The CX-90 lineup is pretty long and comprehensive. And since it’s not exactly a cheap vehicle, you will have to prepare quite a lot. The most basic model would be the Base with the tag of $42,000. The next one would be the Select with $44,000 tag. Afterwards, there would be the Preferred ($46,000), the Premium ($48,000), and then the Signature ($50,000).

As if it weren’t enough, there would be the hybrid versions with higher price levels. There would be Select e-Skyactiv PHEV starting from $52,000. The next one would be the Preferred e-Skyactiv PHEV set at $54,000. The next one in line would be the Premium e-Skyactiv PHEV with $56,000, and the lineup closes with Signature e-Skyactiv PHEV with a tag of $58,000.

Keep in mind that these aren’t the official price lists from Mazda. This is the predicted and estimated tag prices that follow the current structure, which means that it starts from $40,000. Mazda should release official release concerning the price range, detailed specs, and offered trim levels.

Powertrain and Performance

When this CX-90 is launched, it would be the first ever model (from Mazda) running on inline six turbocharged unit with 3.3 liter capacity, supported with 48V of hybrid system. According to the company, this arrangement is able to deliver 340 hp. This is the kind of powertrain that hallmarks the strong SUVs like Land Rover Range Rover Sport or the BMW X5. It also means that Mazda wants so badly to move the brand to the premium category.

There would be a plug in hybrid version, with highly likely using the same layout of CX-60 (which can generate 323 hp) that is offered in European market. It consists of a four cylinder inline unit, a 17.8 kWh (battery) pack, and one electric motor. Hopefully, the new CX-90 would be offered with all wheel driving system as the standard.

Final Words

There are still many things that Mazda hasn’t revealed, such as driving range and battery, fuel economy, detailed features for the cabin, and others. We still don’t know whether we are still going to have the CX-9 or not after this one is released. Let’s wait for further updates about 2024 Mazda CX-90, shall we?
